The Eastern Bank Marion Village 5K has always had a great hometown flavor to it, and this year was no exception as a couple of local ORR star runners placed in the top five. Matt Sullivan, pictured to the right, ran away with the men's title in 16:46 on this hot and extremely humid morning along the Sippican shorefront. In the women's race the top three all ran within seconds of each other through the first two miles with Maria Abel Dieguez of Bristol, RI opening up her lead in the last mile and finishing 1st in 18:09. Two local runners and competitors in the master's division were not far behind as Christine Anderson of New Bedford and Anne Carl Preisig of Mattapoisett finished in 18:42 and 18:59 respectively.

In the men's race the battle was for second place as Fall River's Jeff Reed ran alone in second through the first two miles with Marion brothers Dana and Jared Dourdeville gradually closing the gap. The younger of the two brothers, Dana has just completed a phenomenal freshman year at ORR caught Reed and opened up a few seconds taking 2nd place in 17:45 while Reed crossed in third in 17:49 and Jared fourth in 17:55.

This year's twelfth running of the Marion Village 5K which is a fundraiser for the local youth recreation programs was also a celebration for a local young man who was paralyzed lying in a rehab center in Atlanta this time last year. Patrick Washburn of Marion is not only on the mend, but he started and completed the race this year finishing in 295th place.
