The 7th annual Marion Mile Just for Kids summer running series got off to a great start this week. There were 180 children registered for week # 1, and although many were not in attendance, 135 kids finished the entire mile circuit while at least twenty more younger ones opted to do the first half mile in week one. 14 yr old David Friedman led the way in 5:43 his fastest time in the Marion Mile, although he has gone much faster on the track. 12 year old Gwen McCain finished first for the girls in 7:22. Both winners along with many of the other children participating also ran the Marion Village 5K this past weekend, so their were probably some sore legs in the crowd. 
Due to construction of a new track at Tabor, which race director Chris Adams is very happy about, this year's series is being run on a new race circuit on the Tabor baseball/football field on Spring Street. The course may be a slower than the past years, but parents are able to view the kids throughout the entire mile circuit.
